How Long Do Cloth Nappies Actually Last?

How Long Do Cloth Nappies Actually Last?

It's a fair question to ask before spending on a full stash. A disposable nappy is used once and gone within hours. A cloth nappy is meant to be a very different kind of purchase, so how long does that actually hold up in practice?

What determines lifespan

With a proper wash routine, well made cloth nappies can comfortably last through one child's full nappy journey, birth to toilet training, and often well beyond that. The biggest factor isn't time, it's care. Nappies washed at the right temperature, with load size and detergent matched properly, and without extended ammonia exposure, hold up considerably longer than ones that aren't.

The multiple child factor

This is where cloth really separates itself from a disposable purchase. A stash that sees one child through to toilet training doesn't need replacing for the next one. Many families run the exact same nappies through two, three, or more children, which is a big part of what makes the upfront investment make sense over time.

The secondhand market

Because well made cloth nappies last so long, there's a genuine secondhand market for them, something that simply doesn't exist for disposables. Families who are finished with their stash often sell it on to someone just starting out, and buyers get a fully functional nappy at a lower entry point. It's worth noting that if you do buy secondhand, our FAQ recommends sanitising nappies with an unknown history before use, just as a sensible precaution.

Buy once, buy well

This is really the heart of why a cloth stash is worth thinking about differently to most baby purchases. It isn't bought once and used up. It's bought once and used for years, sometimes across an entire family's worth of children, and still has value left over at the end for someone else's family to start their own journey with.
