Cloth Nappies Explained: The Basics
A reusable cloth nappy is a modern alternative to disposable nappies, designed to be washed and reused. Today’s cloth nappies use absorbent inserts and waterproof outer layers, making them easy to use, comfortable for babies, and practical for everyday Australian family life.
No. Modern cloth nappies are designed to be as simple as disposables, with snap fastenings and straightforward washing routines. Many parents find them easy to use after just a few changes.
Yes. When washed correctly, cloth nappies are hygienic and safe for babies. A regular wash routine using a washing machine removes waste and bacteria effectively.
How Do Cloth Nappies Fit Into Everyday Life?
Every family uses cloth nappies differently. Some choose cloth full time, while others start slowly or mix cloth with disposables. There’s no single “right” way — the best approach is the one that fits your lifestyle.
How many cloth nappies do I need?
Full Time Cloth Nappy Use
If you intend to use Cloth Nappies full time, we recommend a ‘nappy stash’ of at least 24 nappies. This will provide you with an adequate amount if you wash every second day, but many of our customers find a comfortable amount to be around 36. Having more in your stash allows you the ability to extend the days between main washes, or to account for sickness or rain!

How many cloth nappies do I need for full-time use?
Most families use around 20–24 cloth nappies for full-time use, allowing for washing every two to three days.
Part Time Cloth Nappy Use
If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the thought of cloth nappies, or want to ease into the process, starting out with part-time use is a great idea. Some parents choose to do cloth during the day-time, and disposable nappies overnight until they are comfortable with reusables. Even with part-time use you will be saving a huge amount of disposable nappies from entering landfill, and saving a ton of money on your weekly grocery bill.
Is it worth using cloth nappies part time?
Yes. Even part-time cloth use can significantly reduce waste and save money, while helping families build confidence with cloth nappies.
Starting with cloth
Where To Start?
Starting with cloth nappies doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether you want to try a few nappies first or build a full stash, choosing the right style and size for your baby is the best place to begin.
We offer 3 sizes of reusable cloth nappies, designer to support babies and toddlers at every stage.
One Size Fits Most (OSFM)
Our OFSM (One Size Fits Most) Cloth Nappy is by far the most popular and versatile option. It's designed to grow with your baby and it will fit most babies from birth through to toilet training.
Newborn Cloth Nappies
Designed for premature or very small babies, our Newborn Cloth Nappies fit from approximately 1.5kg up to 5kg, providing a secure and trim fit in the early weeks.
Our Large Cloth Nappies are ideal for bigger toddlers or children experiencing extended toilet training. They fit approximately 15–23 kg and are similar in size to disposable nappies size 5–6.
If you’re unsure which size is right, many families start with a mix to see what works best for their baby.
What’s the Easiest Way to Start Using Cloth Nappies?
Many families begin with our Ultimate Trial Pack to build confidence before moving to full-time cloth use. This allows you to try each size before committing.
The trial pack includes one nappy in each size and is a simple, low-pressure way to get started with cloth nappies.
Fitting & Care
Getting a great fit and following a simple wash routine are the keys to successful cloth nappy use. Once you’ve done it a few times, caring for cloth nappies quickly becomes part of everyday life.
A cloth nappy should sit snugly around the waist and legs without gaps, while still allowing room for movement. A good fit helps prevent leaks and keeps your baby comfortable.
Cloth nappies are washed in a standard washing machine using a short pre-wash followed by a longer main wash with detergent. This routine removes waste and keeps nappies clean and fresh.
When washed and stored correctly, cloth nappies shouldn’t smell. Odours are usually a sign that a wash routine needs adjusting, which is easily fixed.
