Are Cloth Nappies Daycare Compatible?
One of the most common reasons families hesitate to start cloth, or stop once they do, is daycare. It feels like one more thing to explain, one more thing that might get knocked back at drop off. The good news is that in most cases, it's far more workable than people expect.
Will daycare actually accept it?
Most centres are happy to use cloth once they understand how it works, which usually takes one short conversation. A simple explanation goes a long way: this is a shell, this is how you remove and re-fasten it, dirty nappies go straight in this wet bag, no rinsing or handling required on their end. Labelling everything clearly with your child's name also removes any guesswork for busy educators managing a room full of children.
If a centre is hesitant, it's rarely because they're against cloth specifically, it's usually because they haven't used it before and aren't sure what's involved. A quick, friendly walkthrough tends to solve that.
Why this one matters so much to us
Anyone who has dropped their child at daycare has seen the bin line outside on collection day. Long rows of bins, full, every single day, week after week, most of it destined to sit in landfill for hundreds of years, if it ever breaks down at all. That image is part of what drives us to keep making this easier for families to solve, because daycare shouldn't be the reason cloth stops.
Making it easy for the days they're not with you
Our wet bags work exactly the same away from home as they do at home. Once a nappy comes off, it goes straight into the wet bag, no different to how you'd manage it in your own nursery. Sending a couple of spare wet bags means the centre always has one on hand, and you're not scrambling each morning.
Pack enough nappies for the full day plus a couple extra, since younger babies in particular can go through more than you'd expect. Our OSFM nappies are simple enough for educators to use confidently after the first demonstration, no different to fastening any other nappy.
If full time cloth isn't an option yet
Not every centre will be on board straight away, and that's okay. Plenty of families run cloth at home and disposables at daycare while they build trust with their centre, or alternate days, cloth on days at home, disposables on daycare days. It's not all or nothing. Any reduction in disposable use still counts, and many families find their centre comes around once they see how simple it actually is.
