How Many Cloth Nappies Do You Actually Need?
It's one of the first questions everyone asks before starting cloth, and it's a fair one. Buy too few and you'll be doing washing constantly. Buy more than you need and you've spent on nappies sitting unused in a drawer. So what's the right number?
The short answer
For full time daytime use, most families land somewhere between 24 and 36 nappies. If you're topping up an existing stash, using cloth part time, or easing in gradually, a smaller pack of 16 to 18 is a great starting point.
But the honest answer has more nuance than a single range, so here's what actually determines where you land in it.
Full time, part time, or easing in
Before washing frequency, the bigger question is how much of your routine you want in cloth to begin with. A full stash of 24 to 36 nappies means every change can be cloth, with the wash routine keeping pace behind the scenes. A smaller stash of 12 to 18 works well if you're easing in, doing cloth for a day or two at a time and using disposables on the other days while that batch is washed and dried. Neither approach is more correct than the other, it's simply a matter of where you want to start and how quickly you want to build from there.
Plenty of families begin part time and grow their stash as they get more comfortable with the routine, eventually moving to full time cloth once it feels easy rather than effortful.
How often you're willing to wash
If you are going full time, the fewer nappies you have, the more often you need to wash. With 24 nappies, most families are washing after two full days of use, and this allows one day for dry time. That's completely workable, plenty of families run a tight 24 nappy rotation the whole way through. It just means the wash routine needs to stay on schedule.
What more room in your stash actually buys you
Every family's stash grows differently. Starting with 24 works, but expanding to 36, and eventually 40, changes the day to day experience more than the number suggests. With a bigger rotation, a wash pushed back a day because life got busy, or the weather wasn't cooperating, genuinely doesn't matter. There's always enough clean and ready.
You don't need the bigger stash to make cloth work. But it's the difference between managing your nappies carefully and having them just quietly run in the background of your life.
Drying access changes the equation
If you're line drying only, particularly through Winter, a slightly larger stash gives you more buffer for slower drying days. Access to a dryer for inserts (never for shells, to protect the waterproof layer) closes that gap considerably.
Multiple children
A well made stash doesn't stop working after one baby. If you're planning for more children down the track, or already have another in nappies, factor that into your number too. One stash can realistically see a family through several kids.
