Cloth Nappy Fit Problems: How to Solve Wetness and Improve Containment

Cloth Nappy Fit Problems: How to Solve Wetness and Improve Containment

A cloth nappy that isn't performing the way you expected is one of the most common reasons families lose confidence early on. The good news is that almost every containment issue comes down to one of three fixable things: fit, boosting, or timing.

Start with fit

Fit is the foundation everything else depends on. Our Cloth Nappy Fitting Guide walks through step by step visual guidance for getting the rise, waist and leg fit right for your baby's shape. A nappy that is slightly too big or too small in any of those three areas will struggle to contain properly, no matter how absorbent the insert is.

If the whole nappy feels wet

When every part of the nappy is saturated, that is simply a sign it is full. The fix is either a change more frequently, or additional boosting added to extend the time between changes. Our nappies are designed to comfortably manage 2 to 4 hours, closer to 2 for heavier wetters. If you are consistently reaching the 4 hour mark fully soaked, it is worth adding a booster or trifold insert rather than waiting it out.

If only one section feels wet

This is usually a placement issue, not an absorbency one. If the fit is otherwise correct but you are noticing dampness concentrated in one area, front, back, or a side, try repositioning where the insert sits inside the shell, or add extra folds specifically in the area that needs it most. Heavier wetters and side sleepers often need slightly different insert placement than the default fold.

Heavy wetters

Some babies are simply heavier wetters than others, and that is completely normal. The combination of a well fitted nappy, appropriate boosting, and slightly more frequent changes usually solves this. It is rarely a sign that cloth "isn't working" for your baby, it is more often a sign the setup needs a small adjustment for how your particular baby wets.

The absorbency will improve with wash

If you are using a new nappy and containment feels underwhelming in the first few washes, that is expected. Our premium custom milled bamboo inserts work from the first use, but continue to increase in absorbency with ongoing washes as the natural fibres open up. Give a new nappy a handful of wash cycles before judging its full performance.

Getting the wash routine right matters too

A wash routine that isn't quite dialled in can also affect how a nappy performs. Our care and washing instructions cover spin speed, wash temperature and drying guidance to keep inserts performing at their best over time.

Still not sorted?

If you have checked fit, boosting and wash routine and something still feels off, our team is always happy to help troubleshoot your specific setup. A well fitted, well boosted cloth nappy should give you all day reliability and containment you can count on, and most issues come down to one small, fixable adjustment.
